“Brigadoon” finds two New Yorkers who are taking a hunting trip to Scotland. While in the Highlands, they find a mystical village that only appears every 100 years. That’s when the two men find love in Scottish K’un L’un. Just kidding. The Immortal Iron Fist wouldn’t be caught dead in Scotland, that’s straight up Grant Morrison territory. What we have is a Lerner and Loewe musical feast of songs that most theater nerds don’t belt out.
While I bemoan “Wicked” ruining a generation of young people, let’s focus on the movie for a second. What kind of fresh hell must this have been to have peak Kelly and peak Minnelli butting heads over the musical staging. The film goes out of its way to box Kelly up out of spite. But, then it goes full open canvas for Van Johnson. Minnelli knows what he’s doing and it seems like there is a story there. I’m just the film nerd enjoying a rather early DVD release finally getting proper HD treatment from Warner Archive.
Seriously, Warner Archive is quickly earning my favorite studio of 2017 spot of praise. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a release label turn it around this drastically. Good work.
