There is a war happening right now on the Arizona/Mexico border. Choose your side.

Academy Award® nominee Sharon Stone stars as Phoenix television reporter Sofie Talbert, a hard-nosed right-wing journalist who exposes liberal politicians soft on illegal immigration. But when her relief-worker brother goes missing in Mexico, Sofie’s own south-of-the-border investigation traps her in a deadly underworld of migrants, smugglers and cold-blooded murder. Here, nothing is what is seems. Nobody should be trusted. And when one woman crosses the line, there can be no turning back. Billy Zane (TITANIC) co-stars in this gritty and intense drama inspired by true events.

“Border Run” is a preachy movie from a crew that doesn’t understand their message. Taking their creative cues from DTV fare, the film wants to be better than the sum of its parts. Unfortunately, it gets heavy-handed and rudderless. Billy Zane shows up to remind people that he’s still working. Still, I can’t help but feel that the film falls apart because of one person.

Sharon Stone does not deliver at all. She is both over-dramatic and detached from her character. The acting may actually bring out a chuckle in what is certainly not a comedic movie. All the blame cannot be put on Stone as it is the director’s job to, well, direct the actors’ performances. Tagliavini not only misses this mark with Stone but also with the story-line. Certain areas that warrant more time and detail are simply brushed over and some that should be short and to-the-point are dragged out for simple shock value.

The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is strong with a supportive transfer and a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1  track doesn’t get much back channel action outside of the few major suspense scenes. In the end, I’d recommend a rental only to the curious.
