Fundraising for Breast Cancer Charity, the BOOBS & BLOOD Film Festival opens on Oct. 5th in N. Hollywood with the launch of its new glossy art magazine, also named BOOBS & BLOOD
“It”s GQ for the psychotronic set” says publisher and festival director Miles Flanagan. “The market was crying out for a stylish, coffee table magazine for the discerning exploitation film and culture fan.”
BOOBS & BLOOD Magazine doesn’t just cover film, it covers alternative art and culture across the globe, with a eye on the psychotronic and obscure. Published quarterly, the all color, glossy magazine is aimed at the design conscious connoisseur of exploitation culture. With correspondents in Tokyo, London, Paris and Los Angeles issue 1 covers such diverse subjects as Tokyo’s Underground Erotic Kaiju wrestling scene with creator (and ULTRAMAN writer) TAKAO NAKANO. We get to look at PETER CUSHING’S most outlandishly sexual film, 1974’s LA GRANDE TROUILLE with some very revealing photos and an even more revealing personal CUSHING letter that explains why he did it.
“The letter has never been published before and it’s a real eye opener as to why Cushing would make such an overtly sexual film. It’s the only Peter Cushing film you’ll see him spanking the bare ass of a French ingenue.”
The Premiere issue also features the first of a 2-part interview with “The U.K’s own Stan Lee,” HOUSE OF HAMMER creator (and V FOR VENDETTA Publisher) DEZ SKINN. California’s own enfant terrible of the Art Scene (and ex-animator) ERIC YAHNKER is also interviewed, revealing the realities of the contemporary art scene and how his often Burlesque art fits (or doesn’t fit) in.
“Our biggest coup was landing an exclusive interview with cult star ANULKA DZIUBINSKA. She’s notable for playing a lesbian vampire lover in JOSÉ RAMÓN LARRAZ’S stunning 1974 VAMPYRES. ANULKA doesn’t do the convention circuit or interviews these days so we were honored when she entrusted us with an interview.” PAT JANKIEWICZ interviews ANULKA and reveals a life way beyond the damp confines of VAMPYRES’ Oakley Court location. “Bet you didn’t know she toured with IGGY POP and DAVID BOWIE during the Berlin phase of their careers? Can you imagine that? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” continues Flanagan.
“The magazine has a strong female editorial slant and we try to cover women in the industry around the world.” Issue 1 has an interview with YUMI YOSHIYUKI, not only a working film director in Japan, but also the last female director currently working in the male dominated world of erotic PINK EIGA.
The magazine also takes a page from the great British street fashion magazine I.D. by photographing regular horror fans, notably cosplayers and the fashion conscious, at conventions such as MONSTERPALOOZA. “There are so many great looking and creative horror-themed cosplayers and very fashionable people at so many conventions today that I wanted to showcase some of the best. I guess it’s the influence of my fashion background as a student at St. Martin’s School of Art,” says Flanagan.
ANULKA plus cosplay stars RACHEL HOLLON, RUBY LEE and BOOBS & BLOOD Honoree BRIGITTE BERLIN (who all feature in the Premiere issue) will all be at the festival signing copies of the magazine.
Profits from the BOOBS & BLOOD Magazine will be donated to Breast Cancer Charity FEEL YOUR BOOBIES. “Giving all profits from the magazine to such an important cause is really important to all involved in the publication. Many of us have been personally affected by this terrible disease and we want to do whatever we can to fight it. So we hope lots of people will go out and buy lots of copies,” says Flanagan. “It’s a beautiful magazine too.”
