“Black Rose” follows a brutal serial killer targeting Russian women in Los Angeles. The result is a muscle laden Russian cop taking things to the limit. Our site’s B-movie action fans were the first to recommend this film to me. Honestly, I don’t understand how a ton of them have seen it before now. But, that’s the magic of the Internet.

What makes the film work is how it handles its culture clash. Nothing in the movie is done in a cliche way. What does happen is our Russian cop hero tries his best to win over the LAPD. For the most part, the charms work. It’s just that after some time, the LAPD starts to question if it’s just a crazy Russian on a rip-roaring path of revenge. Needless to say, people die.

I get the appeal of the film, but at the same time…you have to buy into what’s being laid down. While I find B-Movie action fans to be the most welcoming, I also don’t see the numbers growing. So, what is the non-lead action film to do? Embrace the under appeal and make strong movies like this.
