THE PLOT THUS FAR
On the day before his wedding, retired criminal Jos wakes up next to a murdered man with no recollection of what happened the night before. He soon discovers that a group of gangsters have pinned him as the lone suspect in the theft of 20 kilos of coke. He’s got to get it back in 24 hours, or the life of his bride will be in serious danger. Now he has no choice but to creep back into his dangerous old world of petty thieves and drug dealers – all before his wedding the next day.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Black Out” makes me wonder about the Dutch. Did they just start getting Guy Ritchie and Tarantino movies over there? Everything about this film feels like a kid just saw “Snatch” and every Tarantino movie after the guy discovered the Shaw Brothers. It’s a hodge podge of influence and the end result is a messy pile of influence. I wish that I could say I was seeing something that placed more of a demand on me, but that’s where we are.
Drug fueled escapades are a dime a dozen. The film wants to have the humor of something like The Hangover. However, it feels like it wants to mix Tarantino character nuance together with Guy Ritchie style awkward timings. The end result are cartoon characters destroying most of Amsterdam trying to recover less coke than most of these guys probably snort in a weekend. But, it’s edgy and I have a feeling that this will pass the snuff for most 13 year olds out there.
The DVD comes with a commentary, short film and blooper reel as the special features. The Dolby track provides enough back channel support. That being said, the mix seems a little overproduced. The transfer does the best it can with standard definition. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.
