BIG FISH & BEGONIA

BIG FISH & BEGONIA REVIEWED

“Big Fish & Begonia” has an amazing amount of world-building, but nothing else. Teenagers turn into dolphins on a parallel world to swim through the dimension barriers to break into our world. When they’re here, they becomes teens again and engage in meaningful romance. Apparently, the film was a huge hit in Asia. Why? Well, if I knew…I wouldn’t know. Let’s be honest, all of this stuff just brown noises me.

Then, they throw in this plot about one of the alien girls getting a human boy killed. We get meditations on death and what it means to live. All the while, I’m looking on the box for a rating. It’s a PG-13 with brief nudity. How many kids went and saw this in Asia? Am I to believe that there are this many Asian film fans who want to see animated meditations on death and dimensional barriers being destroyed?

It’s like Ingmar Bergman developed a boner for dolphins and Stranger Things. Whenever I think I understand something about anime, the new stuff just kicks me in the head for fun.
