“Axe” is a weird attempt to capitalize on Southern grindhouse films. This film and “Kidnapped Coed” were shot on the cheap in North Carolina around 1975. The best way to describe them is if Tobe Hooper and/or Wes Craven tried to start aping David Lynch. Spread across lush landscapes with a push to play on weird character quirks is strong. What I find far more interesting than the film is listening to the history behind the film. There’s an insane documentary to be made about how this movie was lost for decades. “Kidnapped Coed” is more of a Stockholm syndrome film. You’ve seen before, but not with so much psychosexuality issues. What I find interesting about this second flick is how much it’s improved upon the Bloody Brothers cut. That secondary cut is included on the set to show what happens when you edit two different films into one piece. While Axe’s violence disappears into a typical horror narrative, the character underpinnings of Kidnapped Coed really pop.SPECIAL FEATURES
