AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, THE

THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE REVIEWED

“The Autopsy of Jane Doe” is part of why I love about IFC Midnight. These releases are allowing cerebral horror to get a venue on home video. I saw TV spots and even a trailer for the film in my market. The kicker was that it got maybe a week on the Arthouse circuit and then it was gone. I thought I lived in an age where that frustration was minimized. So, why was a film about a corpse so interesting?

Well, it’s about the procedure and ability to dive into a mystery. Coroners as detectives have been done before. But, working the family angle and then punching up the action with some key gore use produces a wonderful film. Resolving the murder is nowhere near as fascinating as watching Cox and Hirsh work out their problems. When did I become such a dialogue nerd? The ending twist is telegraphed for a bit. Still, it seems to ride on a wave of contemporary horror started in 2016. I would name the specific choice, but that would be a spoiler.

Still, it’s an interesting twist on that mythos and it helps the film to stick a complicated landing.
