ABRAMORAMA TO RELEASE THIS IS CONGO IN THEATERS ACROSS NORTH AMERICA BEGINNING JUNE 29, 2018
Abramorama announced today they will release celebrated war photographer Daniel McCabe’s debut feature length documentary film This Is Congo timed to the 60th anniversary of The Democratic Republic of Congo’s independence on June 30th. This is Congo world premiered at the Venice Film Festival in the fall of 2017 and has played numerous prestigious festivals since including; IDFA, CPH: DOX, Human Rights Watch Film Festival and DOCNYC. The film will open in New York City at the Maysles Documentary Center and in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Music Hall on June 29th, 2018 and will be released theatrically in select cities across the United States and Canada.
From embedding on the front lines with the national army, to displacement camps, to the black market for minerals, McCabe had unprecedented access to many sides of a decades long struggle for control over the most mineral-rich country in Africa. To capture the footage, McCabe shot with customized camera rigs and used creative sound recording solutions often acting as a one-man crew.
This Is Congo provides an immersive and unfiltered look into Africa’s longest continuing conflict and those who are surviving within it. By following four compelling characters — a whistleblower, a patriotic military commander, a mineral dealer and a displaced tailor — the film offers viewers a truly Congolese perspective on the problems that plague this lushly beautiful nation. Colonel ‘Kasongo’, Mamadou Ndala, Mama Romance andHakiza Nyantaba exemplify the unique resilience of a people who have lived and died through the generations due to the cycle of brutality generated by this conflict. Though their paths never physically cross, the ongoing conflict reverberates across all of their lives.
Director and DP Daniel McCabe said, “After spending nearly 7 years working to createThis is Congo I couldn’t be more excited to release it in cinemas throughout the U.S. and Canada. The team at Abramorama is dedicated to getting films like this one a place on the world’s theatrical stage and to a broad audience. This exponentially increases the power of the film, and the strength of its impact, to both the viewer as well as the Congolese population on the ground.”
Abramorama’s Chief Operating Officer Karol Martesko-Fenster (who is also an Executive Producer on the film) added, “It’s an honor for us to be entrusted to engineer the North American release of This Is Congo on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the DRC’s Independence. Filmed by Dan in extreme conditions, the film captures the tragic violence and incredible beauty of the land and its people and gives the American and Canadian public an unprecedented and timely insiders perspective on the real story of one of Africa’s most ravaged countries. “
Years were spent in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the filmmaking team creating the deep and personal access seen in the film. That intimacy immerses the viewer and closes the gap between their reality and that of the Congolese population being held hostage. While we learn of Congo’s tragic history, systemic corruption and the wholesale impoverishment of its people, one can’t help but see familiar reflections of our own society bouncing back. This is Congo is a universal story that meditates on the corruption of man and the banality of war.
