ANGRY INUK / KARL MARX CITY / MAURIZIO CATTELAN: BE RIGHT BACK REVIEWED
Starting off this trifecta, I watched Angry Inuk first. This film combines the thrill of clubbing seals with the dour nature of giving the need to hunt a face. The documentary doesn’t appeal to anyone side, but it goes out of its way to make everyone feel bad. Good times abound.
Karl Marx City is neither about a city or Karl Marx…discuss. What it does do is give a look at how the Stasi’s impact continue to impact the lives of former East Germans. The spectre of communist ideology hangs heavy over these victims, but it’s a couple of decades removed with limited coverage of actual Stasi officers/related officials. So, what is the big takeaway? Also, why didn’t we get a Terry Gilliam style cutout of Karl Marx to explain it all?
Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back scratches the pretentious artist documentary itch. This guy depicts the Pope getting crushed to death and he duct tapes art gallery owners to walls. While I like the idea of what he does, the guy comes across awful in his interviews. Still, marvelous ideas throughout the piece.
