THE PLOT THUS FAR

With the 70s behind him, San Diego’s top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy, returns to take New York’s first 24-hour news channel by storm.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” was supposed to be the second coming. Then, it came. While it wasn’t terrible, it didn’t match the energy and passion of the first flick. Therefore, people got mad and passed on it. What happened? Everyone wanted to see what happened the crew, more celebs joined in and the film was promoted like a hooker during Fleet Week. Sometimes, not every film needs a sequel.

The three cuts of the movie showcase the central problem on display. No one knew what they wanted. It’s a cult classic that has a larger than life fanbase, but it’s a pretty closed tale. While I love worldbuilding, there’s nothing in any cut of this film that provides anything that builds upon what the first film offers. Brick is still mentally deficient, Champ is a closet case and Brian has cooled it a bit on the sexual predator stuff. Then, there’s Ron Burgundy. You can stretch a joke too far and all three cuts don’t know how to handle his character’s weak point during his blinding. Add songs, cut the cute killer animals or sauce up the dialogue? No one ever seemed to know what works and it pissed off the audience.

The Blu-Ray comes with a DVD copy, Digital HD copy, featurettes, table reads, commentary, gag reel, deleted and alternate scenes. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is pretty strong. However, the 1080p transfer seemed to either blow the walls off during the NewsTeam Mega Battle in Central Park. But, there were times when it was flat during Ron’s blind odyssey. The transfer is consistent across all three cuts of the movie, but for some reason the Super Sized R cut seems a little sharper. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
