“Amsterdamned” is my first real entry into the work of Dick Maas. I always heard of the guy, but I never really ventured into Dutch horror/suspense movies. The result is something that apes late 1980s American horror, while playing with the natural landscape of Amsterdam. The story itself is an odd-ball suspense tale that plays on horror tropes. Specifically, a former diver getting disfigured by toxic materials spilling into his diving area.
The resulting scenes turn what could’ve been a slasher movie into the weirdest police chase movie ever shot. That being said, I love that idea that hard-drinking cops and environmentalists could come together to stop a disfigured diver. When horror movies are willing to go super odd without leaning into the supernatural, I’m always a fan. Younger fans might have an issue with some of the period trappings of the film. If that’s the case, then they’re going to have issues with a ugly diver murdering people like Jason Voorhees cosplaying as Aquaman.
Still, give it a chance. This might be one of my favorite new discoveries of 2017.
