AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING REVIEWED
“Amityville: The Awakening” is such a bizarre movie. It’s an effort to keep a hold on the tenuous rites to the Amityville movies. But, the film spent ages being shelved while Dimension tried to figure out what to do with the movie. Coming from the director of the impressive Maniac remake, I expected something pretty good. It’s just that the film doesn’t know whether it wants to be a possession movie or a haunted star vehicle for Bella Thorne. Jennifer Jason Leigh is squandered here as the token mother.
So, what of the rest of the movie? If you thought there was a way to make the last true Amityville sequel seem restrained, well this movie tried to tug on those coattails. The end result was a mix of weird ideas involving vegetative individuals, loving parents and my wondering how edited down this cut must’ve been. I expected better, but given the current climate…I assume that the rights to Amityville will end up in better hands.
At this rate, it just has to happen. After all, what else could go wrong with America’s favorite haunted house franchise?
