THE AMERICAN SIDE REVIEWED
“The American Side” is a rather wonderful detective story that seems to have snuck past most audiences. Playing around with a classic Marlowe structure, we find an older detective realizing there’s more to blackmail than it appears. Following a mishap that leaves a woman dead, said detective begins delving deep into the murder mystery. What he finds is a conspiracy that takes him to Niagara Falls and the site of several undiscovered Tesla breakthroughs. Faster than you can say Prestige, Matthew Broderick shows up as the billionaire secretly setting everything into motion.
Well, kinda setting things into motion. Nothing is clear and everybody is a moving cog in this vast machinery. But, you do get stellar supporting turns from Janeane Garofalo, Robert Forster and Robert Vaughn. If you’re looking for a film that’s serious about Tesla, you’re going to be annoyed. Tesla’s work is nothing more than a backdrop for a larger story. Still, it’s a story that I enjoyed and recommend to everyone.
