THE PLOT THUS FAR

In the 16th century in the Cévennes, a horse dealer by the name of Michael Kohlhaas leads a happy family life. When a lord treats him unjustly, he raises an army and puts the country to fire and sword in order to have his rights restored.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Age of Uprising” is a stunning film in the vein of “Braveheart”. However, the film is way more dramatic and wistful for a time that France lost over the ages. The violence is there, but it doesn’t have the scope that Mel Gibson brought to a fictionalized Scotland. The ethics and consequences of taking vengeance are explored throughout the bulk of the film. However, is it interesting to see so much dedication to a single man’s internal struggle? You can tell this movie wasn’t made in America.

I love historical fiction, but why did so much of this movie happen offscreen? I don’t think it’s the victim of heavy-handed editing, just a bizarre sense of what was needed to tell the story. There seems to be two films at play and each one seems about 75% completed. Could a recut sharpen this up into something else? Perhaps, but I’m not sure if most viewers could make through any iteration of the film. That’s why I’m suggesting that those with a taste for international flavors find it first to introduce to your friends. Mads Mikkelsen has the cult fans in a tizzy, so that should be your gateway.

The DVD comes with an interview with Mads Mikkelsen, deleted scenes, other interview and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty clean. The transfer is standard definition, but possesses a fine sheen. The same can be said for the Dolby 5.1 track, but in terms of defining audio channel movement. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
