WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Adventure Time” is a cult phenomenon that still manages to find a home at Cartoon Network. When you compare it to the other shows on the channel, there is a shared humor as they try to tackle a broad audience of weirdo and artsy kids. But, none of them try to create a narrative as dense as what Pendleton Ward and company have setup in the Land of Ooo. The jokes aren’t too mature like what you get on Adult Swim, but they require more out of the carpet sitting cereal munching set. Naturally, it has made all of the animation geeks go crazy. But, what has made this show catch on? Why did I wait by mailbox like a goon since I found out I was going to be covering the disc?
This season is when the world building really took over and it makes the Ice King/Marceline relationship focused. “I Remember You” will go down as one of the Top 5 episodes of the series when everything is said and done. The pain of learning how Ice King came to be and how he eventually lost most awareness of Marceline is tragic. If that wasn’t enough, there’s the song that Marcy and Ice King perform together based on Ice King’s final notes before he went insane. That is some next level stuff for a kiddie show.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentaries and an in-depth featurette about the music used in the show. The A/V Quality continues to impress. The 1080p transfer is among the best of the TV releases for 2014. Plus, the Dolby 2.0 track continues to impress even as a lossy track. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
