“An Act of War” caught me by surprise. A lot of Kickstarter aided films come my way and I tend to pass over more than I ever had before. However, I kept returning to this film as it blew me away. I’m a sucker for Black and White cinematography, but there was something else. I dug Doug E. Doug’s performance as a homeless man trying to garner some respect, but that wasn’t it. Was it the PTSD riddled soldier working quite accurately as a Projectionist. Nope.
What the film did for me was tap into that sense of mental anguish that we rarely get in modern cinema. Our lead doesn’t get to romanticize his past or family history as soldiers. If anything, his father’s accomplishments push him further into depression. Watching as the tension and pain build for the duration of the film is almost too much to watch. But, it’s needed. The DVD comes with no special features.
