A Woman of Substance Official Trailer and Key Art Debut—Premiering June 24

One woman, one legacy: BritBox today revealed the official trailer and key art for A Woman of Substance, the sweeping period drama series premiering June 24, 2026, in the U.S. and Canada. The eight-episode BritBox Original stars Brenda Blethyn (Vera, Little Voice) and Jessica Reynolds (House of Guinness, Outlander) as the two versions of iconic character Emma Harte, whose journey from penniless Yorkshire maid in the early 1900s to powerful 1970s business mogul spans six decades of love, loss, war, and unrelenting ambition. Based on the best-selling novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE, the series debuts with two episodes followed by weekly rollout.

The Epic Scope

A Woman of Substance charts a rags-to-riches journey through the 20th century.

The series finds Emma in 1911, an impoverished ambitious maid in Yorkshire, England, who goes on a dizzying journey to become the world’s richest woman, gazing down from a sprawling luxury New York penthouse. Through six decades, Emma amasses power, outwits rivals, and shapes her own destiny.

A tale of women through the 20th century, Emma defies the expectations of her society, fearlessly challenging the roles she’s given, smashing glass ceilings, and never, ever deviating from her masterplan: Get to the top. Whatever it takes.

The Dual Portrayal

Two actresses embody Emma Harte across her remarkable transformation.

Jessica Reynolds (House of Guinness, Outlander) plays the young Emma, the ambitious Yorkshire maid whose determination sets her on seemingly impossible trajectory. The early 1900s chapters presumably establish the circumstances, talents, and injuries that fuel her lifelong drive.

Brenda Blethyn (Vera, Little Voice) plays Emma at her apex, the powerful business mogul who has achieved everything she set out to accomplish. The 1970s perspective presumably provides framework from which the earlier journey unfolds.

The dual casting allows each actress to fully inhabit her era while together creating complete portrait of one extraordinary life.

The Source Material

Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE’s best-selling novel provides the foundation.

The original A Woman of Substance became a publishing phenomenon, its story of Emma Harte resonating with readers who saw their own ambitions and obstacles reflected in her journey. The novel established Bradford as major commercial fiction voice and spawned sequels that continued the Harte family saga.

The television adaptation presumably honors what made the novel beloved while expanding it into the episodic format that sustained narrative requires.

The Ensemble Cast

Beyond Blethyn and Reynolds, A Woman of Substance assembles substantial ensemble.

Emmett J. Scanlan (MobLand) and Lydia Leonard (Ten Percent) bring dramatic credibility. Leanne Best (The Walk-In), Ewan Horrocks (The Last Kingdom), and Harry Cadby (Everything Now) add to the period drama roster.

Will Mellor (Broadchurch), Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?), Niall Wright (Slow Horses), Robert Wilfort (Gavin & Stacey), Mara Huf (Tetris), and Toby Regbo (Outrageous) round out the cast that populates six decades of Emma’s world.

The Creative Team

Katherine Jakeways created, wrote, and executive produced the series, maintaining authorial vision across the adaptation.

Roanne Bardsley co-wrote and co-executive produced alongside Beth Willis and Joe Innes. George Faber executive produces for The Forge Entertainment. The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust also executive produces, ensuring the source material’s legacy receives proper stewardship.

Directors John Hardwick (episodes 1-3), Samantha Harrie (episodes 4-5), and Richard Senior (episodes 6-8) helm different portions of Emma’s journey.

The Distribution

A Woman of Substance streams on BritBox in North America following a deal with Banijay Rights, which handles international distribution.

The eight-episode structure allows sustained exploration of six decades, each installment presumably advancing Emma’s journey while developing the relationships and rivalries that define her path.

The Themes

Emma Harte’s story resonates beyond its period setting.

The glass ceilings she shatters, the expectations she defies, the roles she refuses to accept all connect to ongoing conversations about women’s ambition and agency. Her masterplan, “Get to the top. Whatever it takes,” carries both inspiration and warning, the cost of such determination presumably explored alongside its rewards.

The 1911-to-1970s span encompasses two World Wars, social transformations, and economic upheavals, Emma’s personal journey intersecting with historical forces that shaped the century.

Who Should Watch June 24

If sprawling period drama appeals: Six decades of one woman’s journey provides epic scope.

If Brenda Blethyn’s work impresses you: Her portrayal of Emma at her apex presumably delivers the gravitas her career commands.

If Jessica Reynolds’s rise interests you: Her young Emma establishes the foundation for everything that follows.

If Barbara Taylor Bradford’s novel meant something to you: The adaptation brings Emma Harte to screen with apparent fidelity and ambition.

If women’s stories through history resonate: Emma’s century-spanning journey reflects larger patterns of ambition and obstacle.
