EATEN ALIVE! REVIEWED
“Eaten Alive!” follows the pattern of many Italian cannibalism movies of the 70s through the wee early 80s. While this is the first uncut HD presentation of the film, I’m not sure what else there is to say. It’s cool to see a chick painted gold like in Goldfinger? There’s drug fueled scenes, decapitations and a bare breast too. If I was 13, that would be enough to get me to keep watching the film. So, why am I passively dissing Lenzi?
Not everyone is cut out to handle this kind of film. Did he handle Cannibal Ferox? Sure, but it’s no Cannibal Holocaust. Trying to capitalize on a mix of the Jonestown tragedy, the rise of the Italian cannibal movie and the ever-present zombie gore…we have a film that is simply too much. When the movie’s selling point is that it’s banned in 38 countries, that should tell you something. Gore isn’t the selling point of horror.
Horror films are a narrative that exist to use society’s deepest fears to explore something that matters. This is a movie about seeing which floppy part gets bit first.
