DEATH LAID AN EGG REVIEWED
“Death Laid An Egg” is a proto-Giallo, so it didn’t have time to really become beholden to the slavish conditions of that film mode. What it does do is portray European sexiness by way of criticism of over industrialization. Make no mistake, the real villain of the movie is the automated poultry factory. Jean-Louis Trintignant hates working at the factory and the camera follows him as he helps brutally slaughter chickens from multiple angles. All the while, the little sicko spends his nights cheating on his wife with hookers at sordid spots around town.
But, it’s ok! He’s just simulating murder scenarios to get his rocks off. While a new lady gets his feathers ruffled, his wife finally has enough of the crap. Teaming up with a fellow co-worker, she tries to sabotage his weird roleplay with an actual dead body. This kicks off a bizarre mystery that ultimately results in an attempt to destroy the machine that runs their lives. Honestly, people…it’s like if Godard tried to make a horror movie on purpose. Ponder what that means, while you check out this movie.
