FREEBIE AND THE BEAN

FREEBIE AND THE BEAN REVIEWED

“Freebie and the Bean” is such an odd piece of past filmmaking. James Caan and Alan Arkin have immense chemistry together. However, the film also plays with its early-mid 70s San Francisco setting to a weird degree. Many have mentioned the scene where James Caan guns down a transvestite that shoots Arkin in the shoulder. It’s not that he busts a semi-gay dude, it’s that he shoots him to the point of being disgusting. The scene eventually ends with James Caan collapsing to the ground in a semi-orgasmic collapse.

If that sounds a bit much for you, you might not enjoy the film. But, if you like to see time capsules full of car crashes and chases, this will do it for you. Director Richard Rush has always been an oddball that never quite hit the mainstream. I hope that younger film students take the chance to work their way into his other films. Most are a lot more highbrow than this offering. It’s just that “Freebie and the Bean” is so damn charming. Well, unless you count that one scene being viewed in the modern era.
