WHEELER DEALERS, THE

THE WHEELER DEALERS REVIEWED

“The Wheeler Dealers” finds Texan oilman James Garner heading to New York City to make investments. Along the way, he’s dogged by Mr. Magoo and the Little John bear from Robin Hood (1973) about his quest. Things boil to a point where Garner is being forced to fire his only female stock analyst (Lee Remick). But, Garner likes Remick and gives her thirty days to dump an under-performing stock. This develops into a mutual relationship where Garner buys things on Remick’s advice in a cat and mouse pattern of impressions.

What makes this film so unique is how progressive it was for the 1960s. There’s a mild romance, but Remick has a boyfriend and Garner isn’t that interested in her. What Garner wants is a local playmate to help flip the economic scene. Remick gets used as a scout/Financial Herald of Galactus to find easy marks and Garner swoops in to buy them. The Massachusetts Widget stock from before gets dumped easily in 30 days, but the film finds more material than that.

If you ever wanted to see a platonic “Down with Love”, then this is for you. The difference being that both Remick and Garner are money hungry. The pattern they carve to secure the most funds and improve upon their likes is quite entertaining. Good stuff all around and a great place to start your Lee Remick appreciation.
