THE PLOT THUS FAR
She’s back… and this time, she’s meaner than ever. From the creator, writer, and star of Summer Heights High and Angry Boys comes the continuing story of Ja’mie King, a conniving Year 12 student at Hillford Girls Grammar, a private school in Sydney, Australia. Ja’mie, the self-promoting “queen bee,” returns from an exchange semester for her last three months at Hillford, where she’s the unchallenged diva among the school’s most popular girls. Ja’mie turns her attention to conquering the opposite sex at Kelton Boys Grammar. She soon finds herself in a love triangle with dreamy jock Mitchell and African exchange student Kwami. Her callous manipulations begin to wear thin, but she’ll stop at nothing to achieve her overriding goal: to win the Hillford Medal, given to the “Best Girl in Year 12”.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Ja’Mie: Private School Girl” is the latest Chris Lilley series. That guy got so much material off of Summer Heights High that he could teach a ton of comedians about using their material. That being said, the material has a fanbase. It’s just that everything past that point will leave you wondering when this train ends for Lilley. Still, he pulls off cross dressing on par with the Pythons and Kids in the Hall.
Ja’Mie King is a condemnation of every vapid cultural movement that has reduced young girls to walking vanity plates. While we’ve met Ja’Mie before in the other Lilley shows, the extra spotlight on the young girl hits the point of irritating. I get that’s the point, but it becomes excruciating to make it through the remainder of the series. Luckily, the complete run of the series clocks in at only three hours.
The DVD comes with a featurette, deleted scenes and bloopers as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for a foreign comedy. The Dolby 5.1 surround track gets to show off a lovely soundstage. That being said, the transfer still feels washed out. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
