THE PLOT THUS FAR
This educational show explores many scientific questions and topics about the universe (Big Bang, the Sun, the planets, black holes, other galaxies, astrobiology etc.) through latest CGI, data and interviews with scientists.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“The Universe” is yet another series on History that wants to accomplish a lot. It covers everything from the Star to Bethelem to destruction of Earth. So many of these episodes seem to be focused on the Bullshit or Not factor. I almost expect Henry Silva to introduce every episode of the show. But, they cover a lot of ground without stepping into the Ancient Aliens arena. Still, whenever I discuss the show…I feel like I’m having to validate it. While an investigation into ancient mysteries shouldn’t automatically go on the defensive, I guess that’s just a heads up about where History’s credibility is now. Pawn shops and junk haulers might bring you ratings, but it damages credibility.
Whether it’s Pyramids or Stonehenge, you get a ton of CG recreations of some amazing creations. From the observer’s perspective, that’s neat to get to see things that might not ever see in my life. That being said, it doesn’t support a season of material. If anything, I’m left to wonder why I should care about watching a bunch of speculation about random events. Plus, when you start having to validate things like the Star of Bethelem, does the Ancient Mysteries moniker still qualify? It’s like proving The Fountain of Youth or other historical myths.
The Blu-Ray comes with trailers as the only special features. The A/V Quality is on par with past The Universe season releases. You get a solid DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track. The 1080p transfer makes the documentary pop as it is. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
