THE PLOT THUS FAR

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live your life off the grid? Have you wished you could shed the complications of modern society and live in the wilderness, using only the things nature has provided? Meet Eustace Conway, Tom Oar and Marty Meierotto, three men who have devoted their lives to survival in its simplest form. But how simple is it really? From the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to the seven-month-long winters on the Yaak River in Montana to the frigid northern range of Alaska, the country is full of some very unforgiving terrain. Watch as these men face off against mudslides, falling trees, ravaging weather and even hungry animals, to make sure they obtain the food and supplies they will need to make it through the brutal winter months ahead.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Mountain Men” is a show about people fighting to survive in a job better suited for the 19th century. That being said, there’s something inspiring about three men fighting for survival against the untamed wilderness. Mudslides and other natural disasters don’t get impact the average viewers’ lives. But, it’s neat seeing how one is able to overcome them. Hell, it plays like Rambo with older people at times.

The man vs. nature reality trend is getting old. I can appreciate what’s being done here in terms of quality. It’s just that I can’t see myself watching it on a weekly basis. There’s not enough oomph factor or narrative to keep my eyes glued to the screen. That’s personal preference, but it’s something that’s there.

The DVD comes with thirty minutes of bonus footage as the special feature. The A/V Quality is pretty strong. The transfer is clean, but the Dolby track doesn’t get a ton of back channel support. Ultimately, it’s a pretty standard basic cable TV season on DVD release. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.
