THE PLOT THUS FAR
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“The Story of the Jews” is a meaningful look at Jewish history from Schama. However, it’s boring as hell. If you’ve studied the material with any serious forethought, then you’re just getting the same schlock repackaged. Crack open a book and learn something without a talking head spewing it back at you. But, if you have to have a talking head, then Schama is your guy.
Simon Schama is very intelligent and he knows how to split the program to keep one’s attention. Over five episodes, the focus is clear. But, does it ultimately matter? I felt like I should be keeping a textbook and a notepad on hand while I saw the program unfold. As a viewer, am I expected to feel like I’m in school? When do we get a break from academic pursuits spilling into our entertainment? Some of us just want to be passive slobs that learn about a people’s proud and noble history. Let me the lazy bastard that prior generations struggled and died for me to be. It’s evolution, baby. Let’s be the mammals that Yahweh intended us to become in this modern era.
The DVD comes with no special features. It’s fairly typical for a focus PBS documentary. The A/V Quality is on par with similar documentaries. But, that’s not like it was something that would blow out your home theater. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.
