“1990: The Bronx Warriors” opens in the distant future of 1990. Society has crumbled and The Bronx has become a “No Man’s Land”. Basically, the Italians saw “Escape from New York” and said that they could do that too! So many rip-offs from one country, but I guess we owed them for co-opting the Spaghetti Western. That’s not to mention the many direct set lifts from “The Warriors”.
Vic Morrow and Fred Williamson offer up some familiarity for the newbies. That being said, Castellari doesn’t bother with making this mainstream friendly. The film earns its R at many point with up-close practical effects. I love old-fashioned gore when sprayed across a low budget schlock fest. Now, onto the Road Warrior rip-off!
The Blu-Ray comes with a commentary, featurettes, trailers and a poster/still gallery as the special features. The A/V Quality continues the amazing clean-up. However, I noticed a slight shimmer in the background of interior scenes in glorious 1080p. The DTS-HD Mono audio is appropriate for the early 1980s. In the end, it’s worth a purchase.
