100 STREETS REVIEWED
“100 Streets” wants to be a little bit Altman while being a bit more Curtis. Focusing on urban areas where contemporary lives intermingle isn’t that new. However, it’s a pain to do it correctly. While the main story with Elba and Arterton works well. Cullen and Drameh’s stories fall apart, as the audience keeps feeling a need to return to the central story. When you’re watching something like “Nashville” or “Short Cuts”, it doesn’t matter. You can bob and weave with the people that you find intriguing.
That is the major problem of “100 Streets”. Out of a main cast of 10-12, only 3 characters feel like real people. I get that this movie exists as an Idris Elba acting showcase. Elba kills it in the role and he makes every moment pop. It’s just that at the end of the day, nothing in this film actually matters. There have been a ton of readers complaining about recent dramas not feeling cinematic. Well, your complaints are going to remain with this movie. Give it a shot and try to sit through a rental or stream.
