ZARAFA

Interesting animation leads to middlin' film.

The first giraffe to visit France had a hell of a story to tell.

“Zarafa” is a film about exotic animals being taken into captivity and forced into labor in Europe. There is a ton about colonialism and some historical revisionism about letting things be all peaceful. The animation style is neat and reminds me of a blend of “Prince of Egypt” and “The Boondocks”. You heard that right. Still, smooth angular lines with detailed faces are a nice stylistic choice.

Basically, it’s a tale of two orphans trying to find a way to maintain their friendship. If you don’t read too much into the little African boy trying to save the giraffe, then you’re good. The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, trailers and the original French audio track. The original track doesn’t change much up. The A/V Quality sports a DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track and a smooth 1080p transfer.
