THE PLOT THUS FAR

A kaleidoscopic film portrait of Shelly Brown, a twenty-three year-old alienated urban misfit recently released from a psychiatric hospital.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

An ordinary woman is seen in a therapy session apparently in a residential facility and appears to be near getting discharged by the counselor. We see various scenes from her life, particularly a number of brief relationships with men, various attempts at auditions for various roles in plays, both with questionable results.

There is a riveting hotel scene that feels visceral and intensely compelling, except unfortunately the entire premise of the argument that led to the amazingly acted outbursts felt unreasonable and false to begin with. Our lead character also doesn’t seem to even realize how she did in her auditions, seemingly at odds with the audiences own impressions. Perhaps, the movie is about a woman who really doesn’t connect because she doesn’t connect with herself, and therefore can’t really connect with the audience.

The DVD comes with extended scenes and some essays about the production. The Dolby 2.0 Surround mix feels very weak without any real surround support for ambient action and dialogue. While it isn’t a big action movie, you still need to have something to help create a world. Plus, the dialogue got stepped on throughout the film. In the end, I’d recommend a rental if possible.
