THE PLOT THUS FAR

The 1986 Masters Tournament at Augusta National was the last of Jack Nicklaus’s record 18 majors. At the age of 46, it was arguably the most improbable of those titles and certainly one of the most compelling dramas in the history of sport. Through exclusive interviews, personal reflections, and captivating footage, YES SIR! JACK NICKLAUS AND HIS HISTORIC 1986 MASTERS WIN celebrates the many layers of this thrilling, come-from-behind triumph and this where-were-you moment in history.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

The 1986 Masters Tournament at Augusta National was the last of Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 majors. At the age of 46, it was arguably the most improbable of those titles and certainly one of the most compelling dramas in the history of sport. Nicklaus’ edge-of-your-seat final round allowed him to claim his sixth Masters title and provide the exclamation point on his legacy as golf ’s greatest champion. Through exclusive interviews, personal reflections and captivating footage, this DVD celebrates the many layers of this come-from-behind triumph, one of sport’s greatest ‘where-were-you’ moments.

Jack Nicklaus barely gets a chance to speak in the main feature, but he’s all over the extra interviews. Tiger Woods and the Nicklaus family get a chance to talk about the great titan of golf, but that’s about it. This documentary was originally shown before the 2011 Masters and its more about the impact of the 1986 win. It helped to kick golf into gear and started the superstar media era that would later be dominated by Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie. Sure, there had been bigger players before, but none of them hit the zeitgeist at the right time.

The DVD comes with interviews with Jack Nicklaus as the disc’s sole special features. The A/V Quality is decent, even though there are multiple video sources across multiple areas. The Dolby Surround track is thin and tinny, but that’s typical for these sports retrospective discs. If you’re a fan of Nicklaus, you’ll appreciate the collection. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
