Have you ever seen a sci-fi movie filmed entirely with a smartphone? Up-and-coming British director Tom Harper has done just that.
With a resume that boasts some of the BBC’s most recent film/television success stories, Harper’s latest project saw him behind the (mobile phone) lens for The Swarm, a short horror/sci-fi film about a terrifying swarm of insects that descend on London. Inspired by how much news footage we see today that is shot entirely on mobile phones, Harper translated that idea into a terrifying short film that is suggestive of the style of filmmaking we regularly see in news coverage of natural disasters.
Harnessing the power of five Xperia smartphones powered by Android software, Harper shot the film over the course of two days as part of the Xperia Studio project (www.xperiastudio.com), a collaborative online studio powered by artists of all genres.
