WHERE THE BOYS ARE REVIEWED
“Where The Boys Are” is the kind of teen movie that exists only in the hearts and minds of the Catholic Legion. Buoyed by a Top 10 hit sang by the young Connie Francis, the film is so nerdy that it’s painful. Nobody actually goes to the beach and hits the water. George Hamilton is the young 21 year old breaking away from FOX and straight into your granny’s panties. All the while, we all wonder if someone will pay attention to Yvette Mimieux. Naturally, she gets the darker side of what awaited Donna Pescow in “Saturday Night Fever”.
For those that haven’t seen the movie, I’ll spoil. Once Mimieux can’t get over a boy, she gets passed around the gang until she is finally ran over in heavy traffic. That’s right! In 1960s, you got rid of problematic young girls by having them die! Whomever is programming the releases that Warner Archive has been putting out this year deserves a raise. Too many of these crazy older films are getting ignored by younger generations.
The next time you complain about John Hughes, you should always remember what came before.
