THE PLOT THUS FAR
From the creative mind that brought you Role Models, Wanderlust, The State and Wet Hot American Summer comes Wainy Days, the award winning series about David Wain’s (slightly) fictionalized adventures looking for love in New York City. Each episode follows the rise and fall of another almost relationship, with absurd twists and turns and a slew of guest stars, including Elizabeth Banks, Lake Bell, Julie Bowen, Saffron Burrows, Rob Corddry, Rashida Jones, Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, Amanda Peet, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
This goofy Internet comedy series follows the fictional romantic misadventures of director David Wain as he visits a dodgy massage parlor, takes lessons from a pickup artist and otherwise tries to ramp up his love life in the Big Apple. The shorts feel viral in nature, but they tend to last about five minutes longer than need be. I thought Adult Swim and Youtube had taught people that the usual twenty-two minute blocks don’t have to be forced on everything. Whatever happened to brevity?
Some of those aspects of the show might be too dumb for people, but for those who can appreciate the humor, this is hilarious. It’s so dumb, just like Stella, and nonstop laughs if you can appreciate it. Just don’t expect the clever insight of “The Baxter” or “The Ten” to be on display. “Wainy Days” is based on very fast laughs and trotting out the latest celeb friend. That might be enough for some, but it started to annoy me after awhile.
The DVD comes with commentaries, outtakes, shorts, exclusive Pajama Party footage and a Season 4 promo. The script reading and never-before-seen footage was fun, but it wasn’t groundbreaking. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for a show shot for the internet. The video quality does shift when it comes to bonus footage, but not by much. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
