UP THE CREEK

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Bob McGraw is in his 12th year of college, goofing his way through life. Bob, Irwing, Gonzer and Max are the four losers forced and bribed to represent their university in an intercollegiate raft race. Forced and bribed into this role, they make some friends, the lovely Heather Merriweather, but mostly enemies, among others a whole team of marines, and preppy IVY-leaguers determined to win.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Under pressure from LePetomaine University’s dean, 12th-year senior Bob rallies his friends to win a raft race against competitors from rival colleges. If Bob and his pals are victorious, they’ll be given degrees they haven’t technically earned. There’s nothing original in the screenplay and most of the charm comes from the three leads but the charm isn’t from this film but remember them from their previous work. Of the cast, Matheson comes off the best even though he’s character is just a reject from Animal House. The movie is also rather tame in the sex/nudity department especially compared to other films that were out around this period.

Still, it had all the standard sorts of humor, titillation and innuendo (and even the actors!) from many of the other teen/sex comedies of the era, but it had one extra element that made it stand out. It had absurd Warner Brothers cartoon gags and sound effects. Sure, you have your elite ivy league villainous snots that win every year and go out of their way to cheat to win the raft race.

The DVD comes with no special features. But, you get an adequate transfer and Dolby mix for a DVD-R. Seeing as how this is the film’s first jump to DVD, it fares pretty well. I did notice some edge enhancement throughout the film, but it’s nothing that major. In the end, I’d recommend it this as a nice example of what kind of crap you could get away with in the 1980s.
