TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN AKA SEASON 3 REVIEWED

“Twin Peaks” returned in 2017 with a series that was too smart for most. While many pondered the idea of David Bowie as a random object, David Lynch yelling at us to live better or Kyle MacLachlan getting into utter duality; one has to wonder if we deserved this. Thankfully, the series ends rather open-ended and Lynch slyly teases that he will return to the series. It’s just that I wonder if we deserve this kind of Lynch.

The case seems a little fanboyish, as they attempt to appeal to one of the few living film masters. But, Lynch isn’t concerned with them or you. He’s making a series that ponders the nature of reincarnation and what it means to be reborn in a world that doesn’t fit. Characters and trends come and go, but what does it mean to be a stranger trying to comprehend these actions? Who is actually the stranger in this world?

The title Twin Peaks reinforces this idea of duality. As many were quick to make memes of Agent Cooper’s return and to try to understand what’s happening to Laura, they miss the obvious clues. Like some sort of bizarre Al Jaffe fold-in, Lynch is daring the audience to make sense of the picture he’s shoving together. Recognize greatness and pick this up.

Initially, I was going to add more to this assessment. I’m still not sure if my full read on the series is there yet. Why? Well, because I still feel that we’re getting another season to mirror what happened here. Being that it’s David Lynch, I’m not holding the guy to a timetable. The fact that this Season happened is an impressive feat.
