TOUCHBACK

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A man looks back 15 years to the injury that ended his career as a promising high-school football player.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Touchback” taught me that suicide attempts can trigger time travel. It’s like “Quantum Leap” got a LiveJournal and decided to do something interesting. I kid, this is just a football movie with pseudo religious aspects. One must wonder why such a great cast has involved themselves with it. All I have to say is that it looks like a viable check for somebody.

Kurt Russell does the best he can with the material. However, he’s fulfilling this weird old veteran role that he’s been relegated to since “Miracle”. Why does everyone have to get inspired by Russell? I enjoy him much more when he’s mowing people down in a Death Proof car. That being said, it’s emotional sports porn at its finest.

The Blu-Ray comes with a commentary, featurette and DVD copy. The A/V Quality sports a pretty clean 1080p transfer. However, I found the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix to be too soft on dialogue while overamping the football action. That might be good enough for some, but I was slightly underwhelmed. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
