THE PLOT THUS FAR
Two guys get a billion dollars to make a movie, only to watch their dream run off course. In order to make the money back, they then attempt to revitalize a failing shopping mall.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Billion Dollar Movie” opens on Tim and Eric losing the $1 billion they were given by a Hollywood production company to make their own movie. Part of this involved the invention of a ridiculous new movie theater seat equipped with an oxygen tube, an IV hookup, and stirrups. They have no choice but to payback the psychopathic studio heads, for the contract they signed made them solely responsible for the money. As luck would have it, they see an ad on TV for a mall somewhere in the Midwest, which has fallen on hard times and is in desperate need of new management. The owner, Damien Weebs, promises a cash prize of $1 billion to anyone able to rehabilitate the mall. And so Tim and Eric miraculously walk to the Midwest all the way from Hollywood – and strangely, never once do they swing their arms.
The brilliance of Tim and Eric lies in the not-subliminal-whatsoever absurdness that the style brings. Awesome show was just that. It was shock humor not based on the vulgarity but on the sheer surprise that a mind could conceive of the silliness. This is not new, just new in the way Tim and Eric have mastered the art. But now we bring vulgarity into it. In past shorts they have done, the vulgarity doesn’t blend with the creativity well. As a matter of fact, it sort of takes it over. Shock value is great when it is done in a new, fresh, cerebral way. This movie pushed creativity to the side and rooted the shock humor in vulgar ways that just are too easy to do.
The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, trailers, Shrim materials, deleted scenes and commentary. The DTS-HD 5.1 HD-MA track was really expansive for a film about nothing. The 1080p transfer was flawless for a low-budget comedy. But, Tim & Eric rarely release anything that looks less than the best. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to all Tim and Eric fans.
