THE 2008 AV HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: DVDs

1. MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS – CRITERION COLLECTION
CRITERION COLLECTION

The key spot in this Guide belongs to Criterion again. The true power of the DVD format is to get you to rediscover films that you long forgot. That is what Criterion did with Mishima. Truly amazing work.

2. THE ENTIRE SEVERIN FILMS CATALOG FOR 2008

These guys are the only game in indie DVD releasing right now. Seriously, Anchor Bay has given up the ghost since the Starz buyout.

3. LOST: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON
ABC/DISNEY

After Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, it s survivors were forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive. But they discovered that the island hold many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, a strange French woman and another group of island residents known as The Others. The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past.

4. HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY
UNIVERSAL

Packed to the brim with Satanic goodness, it’s only beset by the fact that it doesn’t sport 1080. That’s why the Blu-Ray ranks higher.

5. THE DARK KNIGHT
WARNER BROTHERS

Having just recently gotten to crack into the DVD release. It’s amazing. Sporting near HD transfer quality. The special features are informative, but they seem to be a little too EPK-ish. That cost it a top spot.

6. WALL-E: 3-DISC SPECIAL EDITION
PIXAR/WALT DISNEY

7. MURNAU, BORZAGE AND FOX
20th CENTURY FOX

8. MAN ON WIRE
MAGNOLIA

I wanted to hate this due to how much over-exposure it was getting from the NYC Critics. But, it’s a solid documentary. Nowhere near as solid as the Roman Polanski documentary released earlier this year. But, this release had a better DVD.
