THE SUFFERING OF NINKO REVIEWED
“The Suffering of Ninko” is an erotic fantasy set during the Edo period. It’s not erotic in the Red Shoe Diaries sense. But, more in the adult tinged legend sense. A monk has an encounter with a masked woman that causes him to become sexually irresistible. Men and women lust after him, as he tries to make his way across the countryside to regain his senses. The desire to return to a state of Zen is palpable, while the sex stuff is there to titillate.
For a film this short, I wish that it had a better ending. The pace was a rollercoaster ride of never knowing where to punch up a scene or end it. Still, the central concept is neat and something you don’t see in a ton of American work. I’d recommend it.
