SPORK

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Spork is a thirteen year-old frizzy-haired outcast who’s not afraid to stand out despite the pressures around her to fit in. Luckily a junior high dance competition provides the perfect opportunity for her unique talents to shine through.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

With unruly hair, enormous glasses and pink cheeks, junior high outcast Spork has trouble fitting in anywhere. But after befriending her neighbor Tootsie Roll, Spork enters the school’s dance showcase, which leads to sweet new possibilities. At points, it channels “Lucas”. Other times, it seems to be forcing itself into that comfortable niche that Jon Heder carved out in 2004 and then buried his hopes and dreams.

Some people won’t be able to handle it’s quirkiness and it’s out of the ordinary characters but others will eat it up. I ate it up once I learned not to take the film seriously. The story of Spork is simple as its just about a nerdy kid who gets picked on at school. The difference here is what J.B. Ghuman Jr does with the film. He dares to give his characters odd names and mock stereotypes. He tries new things that most who don’t truly appreciate “odd ball” films won’t admire.

The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is strong enough for an indie comedy, but it’s not that impressive. You’ll get the usual haze and limited soundstage. But, it works for the moments when you need Spork to steal the show. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase for the truly curious.
