SMALL TOWN IN TEXAS, A

THE PLOT THUS FAR

After serving three years in prison, a young man’s hopes of reuniting with his sweetheart and baby are dashed when he discovers that the sheriff has taken up with his girlfriend.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“A Small Town in Texas” opens on Poke Johnson returning from a prison sentence on a trumped-up marijuana charge. He tries to reunite with his sweetheart and learn of his love child, Poke comes to a startling revelation. His girl and child have been shacking up with the evil sheriff that stuck him in jail. Poke tries to drink the pain away and head out of town to California, when he catches the Sheriff in a delicate political situation. The problem is that the Sheriff spots Poke observing his criminal acts.

Susan George seems so terribly miscast in the flick. She doesn’t get much to play off with Bottoms, but she could’ve at least acted scorned by her imprisoned lover’s inability to acknowledge them. Bo Hopkins carved out a comfortable space playing the usual Southern Redneck butthole law enforcement figure. But, the whole film could’ve been resolved with people showcasing a modicum of intelligence. It’s great later-gen AIP schlock for those that care.

The DVD comes with no special features. But, you get an adequate transfer and Dolby mix for a DVD-R. Seeing as how this is the film’s first jump to DVD, it fares pretty well. I did notice some edge enhancement throughout the film, but it’s nothing that major. In the end, I’d recommend it this amazing Po-Mo Southern crime flick.
