“Short Term 12” could be easily dismissed. Another sad sop tale of abuse and a young woman beating the odds. However, Brie Larson leads this wonderful cast in producing something that beats the standard. I could spend all day talking about Oscar buzz and this being a star making turn. However, that would be a disservice to the rest of the film.
There are many characters in the film, specifically the kids in the foster care, and each and every character with a speaking role is a completely fleshed out, multi- dimensional character. It was easy to connect with every character since you really felt for their difficult life situation and it was riveting to see these characters interact with each other in a realistic way.
It kills me when I cover films like this. I know that 90% of our readers won’t get to have any theatrical engagement and they’ll be lucky to discover it on home video. That being said, Cinedigm is sitting on a real winner here. It’s nice to see that storytelling still matters. In the end, I’d recommend the film to everyone.

A film by:
Destin Daniel Cretton
Cast:
Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., Kaitlyn Dever, Rami Malek, and Keith Stanfield
Synopsis:
Short Term 12 is told through the eyes of Grace (Brie Larson), a twenty-something supervisor at a facility for at-risk teenagers. Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge – and in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (John Gallagher Jr.). But Grace’s own difficult past – and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself – throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection. While the subject matter is complex, this lovingly realized film finds truth – and humor – in unexpected places. The second feature from Destin Daniel Cretton (I Am Not a Hipster), Short Term 12 also stars Kaitlyn Dever (Bad Teacher), Rami Malek (The Master), and Keith Stanfield.
