THE PLOT THUS FAR

Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the world’s oldest and most famous spy agency. Home to the legendary Agent 007, James Bond, it has been at the center of international espionage for over 100 years. Now we reveal the truth behind the covert operations, the tales of treachery and the double-agents who’ve risked their lives. With interviews from the major players in British espionage we expose the dangerous secret world of real life spies.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Secrets of Her Majesty’s Secret Service” is a rather informative look at the rise of England’s greatest spy agency. While they play around with the Bond motif, there is some serious looks at how the UK conducts their police work. Especially, when the matters delve into international espionage. A generous portion of the documentary is also spent examining those who lost their lives in service to the government. It’s pretty touching and it helps to put a human face to the spy antics that we watch on the big screen. I just wish we had a proper history of everything that was covered here.

I love watching the PBS documentaries on England. That being said, there’s so much material stuffed into an hour that makes me feel like it could’ve been a series. But, I’m the nerd that would spend hours watching this in HD. It doesn’t pay to be an Anglophile in America anymore. Our Office was better, the nerds have ruined Dr. Who with their Matt Smith love and we continue to keep rocking it in the USA. I don’t know where I was going with that last bit.

The DVD comes with no special features. The standard definition transfer is crisp enough. The Dolby track is a supportive surround mix. It’s typical for most documentaries. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
