SATANIC PANIC: POP-CULTURAL PARANOIA IN THE 1980S

THAT TIME I TRIED TO READ A BOOK ABOUT SATANIC PANIC

Whenever I sit down to read a book, no one will live me alone. I’ve got people coming out of the woodwork to bug me while I read and it’s a bit much. So, what should’ve taken three days has now taken a few weeks. Finally, I can say I wrapped up the book and enjoyed the hell out of what I read. The history of Satanic Panic in America goes far beyond the 1980s. We get a taste of that history, but the focus on a single decade helped put things into focus.

MICHELLE REMEMBERS FASCINATES ME

Michelle Remembers and the Russ Martin books were a heavily anti-female focal point of Satanic Panic. While the Martin books were partially funded by Playboy, the materials put the focus of the evil Satanic cult influence squarely on women. The nature of Satanic Ritual Abuse placed the blame square on women as children and teens for propagating the cause. They were weak and impressionable, so they were able to be molded into future Satanic baby factories? Yeah, the logic is a bit faulty, but the book isn’t here to explain it. This is a tome to a weird cultural underpinning in America.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT SATAN?

Moral panic in all of its form has a unique ability to get culture into a fervor. While the aftermath of this Satanic Panic caused innocents like the West Memphis 3 to get profiled and falsely imprisoned, what about those that slipped through the cracks? Too often morality gets used as a false shield to slam down all of those that question the logic of a society that rides incompletely social rules. This book is an eye opener and I feel should be continued as a series spotlighting moral panic issues throughout the years.
