SANCTUARY: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Stem cells, gene therapy, transplants, and cloning have changed the definition of “humanity” in the modern world, but the darker side contains monsters that only few are brave enough to face, because the future lies in their hands.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Sanctuary” is set in some large, perpetually dark would-be Gotham City, where Dr. Will Zimmerman is a criminal profiler investigating a mysterious triple homicide in an apartment building. Using his skillful intuition, he suspects that something is amiss right away, that whatever killed these three people was not human. It turns out that his suspicions are correct: the killer, a 10-year-old Russian boy with a hideous snake-like appendage, had been adopted by the family and attacked them when he felt threatened.

The fourth season focuses on the Hollow Earth stuff and the true age of Dr. Magnus. While I applaud SyFy for killing the show before it disappeared up its own ass, we do get a taste of that here. The show lost its focus late last season, but now it keeps finding no way to close the plot. It’s a mess of Claremontian levels that never finds a point. Still, it’s fun to watch.

The DVD comes with commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes and a gag reel. The A/V Quality is pretty strong for a show that just got cancelled. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio makes the Canadian Sci-Fi come to life. Hell, the 1080p transfer popped throughout the typical monster mashes. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
