RIVER WHY, THE

THE STORY SO FAR….

A fisherman abandons his big-city life to find himself in the wild.

HAT WE THOUGHT

Zach Gilford stars as Gus Orviston, a discontented city-dweller who abandons the urban rat race, moves to the wilderness to devote his time to fly-fishing and begins a quest to pull a prize rainbow trout from the river. As his odyssey takes on deeper emotional dimensions, Gus strikes up a relationship with lovely fellow angler Eddy (Amber Heard) in this dramatic adaptation of David James Duncan’s acclaimed novel of the same name.

There is occasionally great cinematography and a few artsy shots, but the incessant folk music in the background fails to envelope the viewer in the story and begins to feel more like hillbilly drivel. the movie synopsis seems to be for another movie as Zach starts out as an outdoor hick who’s pissed with his arguing family and runs away to Portland. True he fishes every day but does not seem to be chasing the prize rainbow but instead just catches for catch sake.

The Blu-Ray comes with cast and crew interviews as the sole special feature. The A/V Quality is strong enough for an indie drama with a strong DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track. The 1080p transfer feels a little flat with no background definition. The field of depth is for nothing which ruins so many potential outdoors fishing shots. Oh well, it’s still worth a rental.
