RETURN OF COUNT YORGA, THE

Where else do you pick up a new wife than at an orphanage?

Count Yorga is quite the odd character.

“The Return of Count Yorga” borrows heavily from Dracula. But, vampire movies will do that. If you haven’t seen the first film, you’re not missing much. The sequel is far more linear and plays the horror straight. In a way, you can see the bones of movies like “Fright Night” originating with this film’s plot. How far off is little Tommy from Evil Ed? Not much.

This is an odd horror film that wanted to play Old World Gothic aesthetic within the drive-in world of 1970s California. The T&A is on display in full effect, while Count Yorga does his best to woo Mariette Hartley. The cops including a debut performance from Craig T. Nelson are hopeless, but that’s tradition. If you’re interested in the series, I’d suggest picking up the first movie from Twilight Time. It’s quite the duology.

The Blu-Ray comes with commentary, trailer, TV & radio spots and a photo gallery as the special features. The A/V Quality is amazing for this release. The 1080p transfer beats my old double feature DVD. The DTS-HD mono track is true to its origins. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
