RALPHIE MAY: TOO BIG TO IGNORE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Ralphie May proves he’s TOO BIG TO IGNORE in his record breaking 4th Comedy Central Special. Voted one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch, Ralphie May spreads his comedic wealth further than ever by tackling topics that will make you think and occasionally squirm. With no subject off limits, Ralphie dives in and reveals the hilarious quirks that infiltrate politics, race and even his family. Lovable enough to get away with anything, Ralphie continues to capture the hearts of thousands on his sold out tours and promises to make you gleefully uncomfortable.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Ralphie May was really aggressive in this special. A lot of people pay attention to how he went after Chaz Bono, but something seems to have changed with this set. Some fans seem to believe that he’s gone political. I just find that he’s using his fame and extra clout to make a lot of easy jokes about Mexicans and gays. Not that there’s anything wrong with celebrating a strong comedic history of cracking wise at the expense of minorities. It just feels off when you have a venomous bite to it.

The problem with these comedy discs is that the material will run very thin at some point. So, it requires some appreciation for May or you’re going to bail on it. The special is nearly two hours long, but it’s done in a breathless rant that makes it feel like half of that time. If I cared for the material, I would be disheartened. As it stands, I’m just glad it finished when it did.

The DVD comes with a behind-the-scenes featurette. The A/V Quality is pretty strong for standard definition. The Dolby Surround track did its job and nothing more. But, what did you expect? In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to Ralphie May fans.
