POOL BOYS, THE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A pool boy and a gardener turn an empty mansion into a home for women who belong to the world’s oldest profession.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Harvard-bound Alex spends the summer with his pool-boy cousin in Los Angeles, where they team with a local working girl to start an escort company. But as business booms, Alex must be careful that no one at Harvard learns of his new profession. I was just starting to hope that Matthew Lillard was turning in a corner when I saw him in “The Descendants”. The guy held his own and really made his part work, but I guess the sex comedies are a safe bet for working actors. Whatever happened to wanting prestige anymore?

The film isn’t that risque. The story was adequate, but the acting was good. For me, this movie failed to make me laugh, though it was basically funny throughout the movie, just not to the point where you laugh. It drew forth a couple of smiles, that was about it. It’s another one of those year-ender flicks that just kind of exists and doesn’t really wow anyone. That’s not to shit on the flick. HBO and the other cable giants used to make their name by populating their channels with this kind of schlock.

The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette and a virtual lapdance from the Pool Boys service. The A/V Quality is pretty strong, as E1 seems to moving away from lossy audio tracks. That being said, the 1080p transfer and the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track are strong enough for a middlin’ movie. It’s not like the flick is going to change your life. I’d recommend a rental.
